Visit of Professor Nayanjot Lahiri, Department of History, University of Delhi, under the Distinguished Visitors Programme of the India-Sri Lanka Foundation

 Professor Nayanjot Lahiri from the Department of History, University of Delhi, will be visiting Sri Lanka from 26 January to 1st of February, 2014, under the Distinguished Visitors’ Programme of the India-Sri Lanka Foundation.

Professor Nayanjot Lahiri is the author of several books including Pre- Ahom Assam (1991), The Archaeology of Indian Trade Routes (1992), The Decline and Fall of the Indus Civilization (edited;2000), Finding Forgotten Cities (2005) and Marshalling the Past (2012). She was awarded the Infosys Prize for Humanities – Archaeology in 2013 for, as the citation stated, ‘her outstanding contribution towards the integration of archaeological knowledge with the historical understanding of India from the earliest times’.

Professor Lahiri would be delivering a lecture on the theme “Asoka: Interweaving Archaeology with the Emperor’s Story” at the BMICH Committee Room A, on Friday, 31 January 2014 at 1630 hrs. Simultaneous interpretation in Sinhala and Tamil will be provided during the lecture. The lecture is being organized in association with the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS)

Professor Lahiri would also be visiting Kandy and delivering a lecture on the theme “Indus Valley Civilization: Some Perspectives” organized by the Assistant High Commission of India, Kandy, at the Seminar Room, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya, on Tuesday, 28 January, 2014 at 1500 hrs.

The India - Sri Lanka Foundation, which is supporting this event, was established by a Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of India and Sri Lanka in 1998 in order to foster India - Sri Lanka relations through the enhancement of economic, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation and to promote greater understanding between the people of the two countries.
