The Sri Lanka India Society (SLIS) celebrated India’s Independence Day and SLIS’s Platinum Jubilee on August 5, 2018 at a function held in Colombo. High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka H.E. Taranjit Singh Sandhu was the chief guest at the event. Hon. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Vasantha Senanayake, Hon. Mayor of Colombo Ms. Rosy Senanayake, Attorney General Jayantha Jayasurya, President of SLIS Mr T.S. Prakash and dignitaries from the industry and other fields were also present during the occasion. 

SLIS was founded in 1949, soon after the independence of India and Sri Lanka. SLIS is the oldest and largest friendship society in Sri Lanka.

Delivering the keynote address, the High Commissioner noted that India was the 6th largest and fastest growing major economy in the world and highlighted that Sri Lanka’s location in the proximity of fastest growing economy could bring in substantial advantages. High Commissioner stressed that India – Sri Lanka relations should look towards the future. He highlighted that Sri Lankan youth could fulfill their aspirations and make them a part of India’s growth story.

Various people - oriented development projects undertaken by India in Sri Lanka, which had a direct impact on the lives of common people including the Indian Housing Project and the Emergency Ambulance Service - the nationwide expansion of which was recently launched, were highlighted. High Commissioner stressed that India had also done close to 70 people-oriented small development projects across all the Provinces of Sri Lanka. Around 20 such projects including construction of rainwater harvesting units, construction of toilets, upgradation and construction of schools such as the tri - lingual school in Polonnaruwa, and providing infrastructure facilities for Universities including a 1500 seats auditorium in Ruhuna University in Matara are currently underway.

High Commissioner emphasized that India's development partnership was not limited to one sector or area but encompassed a wide variety of sectors and was spread all across the island.  He added that it was heartening to note that India had been able to fulfill our promises in a timely manner.

High Commissioner pointed out that as democracies who are mandated by the will of the people to fulfill their aspirations, India and Sri Lanka had the responsibility to make the developmental journey as smooth, fast and comfortable as possible. Not just the Governments on both sides, but the industry, academics, youth, and societies had an important role to play in shaping the future.

During the event, the past Presidents of the Sri Lanka India Society were felicitated. The event concluded with a musical performance by the Oriental Choir of Colombo and a fellowship dinner.

ශ්‍රී ලංකා ඉන්දියා සමාජය විසින් 2018 අගෝස්තු 5 වන දින ඉන්දීය නිදහස් දිනය සහ ශ්‍රී ලංකා ඉන්දියා සමාජයේ ප්ලැටිනම් ජුබිලිය කොළඹදී සමරන ලදී. ඉන්දියාවේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා මහ කොමසාරිස් තරංජිත් සිං සන්ධු මැතිතුමා ප්‍රධාන ආරාධිත අමුත්තා ලෙස මෙම අවස්ථාවට සහභාගී විය. විදේශ කටයුතු රාජ්‍ය අමාත්‍ය වසන්ත සේනානායක මහතා, කොළඹ නගරාධිපති රෝසි සේනානායක මහත්මිය, නීතිපති ජයන්ත ජයසූරිය මහතා, ශ්‍රී ලංකා ඉන්දියා සමාජයේ සභාපති ටී. එස්. ප්‍රකාශ් මහතා හා වෙනත් කේෂ්ත්‍ර නියෝජනය කරන සම්භාවනීය අමුත්තන් රැසක්ද මෙම අවස්ථාවට සහභාගී වූහ.

ඉන්දියාව සහ ශ්‍රී ලංකාව නිදහස ලබාගැනීමෙන් කෙටි කාලයකට පසු 1949 දී පිහිටුවන ලද ශ්‍රී ලංකා ඉන්දියා පදනම ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ පැරණිතම සහ විශාලතම මිත්‍රත්ව සමාජයයි.

මෙම උත්සවයේ ප්‍රධාන දේශනය පවත්වමින් ඉන්දියානු මහ කොමසාරිස් තරංජිත් සිං සන්ධු මැතිතුමා කියා සිටියේ ඉන්දියාවේ ආර්ථිකය ලෝකයේ හයවැනියට විශාලතම හා වේගයෙන්ම වර්ධනය වන ආර්ථිකය වන අතර ශීඝ්‍රයෙන් වර්ධනය වන ආර්ථිකයක් සහිත රටකට සමීපව පිහිටීමෙන් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට සැලකිය යුතු වාසි රැසක් ලබා ගත හැකි බවයි. ඉන්දියා - ශ්‍රී ලංකා සබඳතා අනාගත දැක්මක් සහිතව සකස්විය යුතු බව මහ කොමසාරිස්වරයා මෙහිදී අවධාරණය කළේය. ශ්‍රී ලාංකික තරුණ තරුණියන් හට සිය අභිලාෂයන් සපුරාගත හැකි බව පැවසූ එතුමා ඔවුන්ට ඉන්දියානු වර්ධනයේ කොටසක් බවට පත් විය හැකි බවද ප්‍රකාශ කළේය.

ඉන්දීය නිවාස ව්‍යාපෘතිය සහ මෑතකදී දිවයින පුරා ව්‍යාප්ත කෙරුණු හදිසි ගිලන් රථ සේවාව ඇතුළු සාමාන්‍ය ජනතාවගේ ජීවිතවලට ඍජු බලපෑමක් එල්ල කළ හැකි ජනතා කේන්ද්‍රීය ව්‍යපෘති පිළිබඳවද මෙහිදී අවධාරණය කෙරිණ. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ සියලු පළාත්වල 70 කට ආසන්න කුඩා ප්‍රමාණයේ ජනතා කේන්ද්‍රීය සංවර්ධන ව්‍යපෘතින් ඉන්දියාව විසින් ක්‍රියාවට නංවා ඇති බව මහ කොමසාරිස්තුමා අවධාරණය කළේය. වැසිජලය එක්රැස් කිරීමේ ඒකක ඉදිකිරීම, වැසිකිළි ඉදිකිරීම, පොළොන්නරුවේ ත්‍රෛභාෂා පාසල් වැනි පාසල් ඉදිකිරීම හා රුහුණු විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ ආසන 1500කින් සමන්විත ශ්‍රවණාගාරය අලුත්වැඩියා කිරීම ඇතුළු විශ්ව විද්‍යාලය සඳහා යටිතල පහසුකම් සැපයීම, ආදී ව්‍යාපෘතීන් 20ක් පමණ මේ වන විට ක්‍රියාවට නංවා තිබේ.

ඉන්දියානු සංවර්ධන සහයෝගිතාව එක් අංශයකට හෝ ප්‍රදේශයකට පමණක් සීමාවී නොමැති බව අවධාරණය කළ මහ කොමසාරිස්තුමා සංවර්ධන ව්‍යාපෘතීන් සෑම ප්‍රදේශයක්ම ආවරණය කරමින් විවිධ කේෂ්ත්‍රයන්හි ක්‍රියාවට නංවා ඇති බව පෙන්වා දුන්නේය. තම පොරොන්දු නිසි කලට ඉටු කිරීමට ඉන්දියාවට හැකි වී ඇති බව සතුටට කරුණක් බව ඔහු වැඩිදුරටත් පැවසීය.

ජනතා අභිලාෂයන් සපුරාලීම සඳහා ජනතාවගේ අභිමතය පරිදි බලයට පත් වූ ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදී රාජ්‍යයන් ලෙස සංවර්ධනය පහසු කිරීමට සහ වේගවත් කිරීමට ඉන්දියාවට හා ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට වගකීමක් පවතින බව මහා කොමසාරිස්වරයා පෙන්වා දුන්නේය. දෙරටෙහි රජයන්ට පමණක් නොව කර්මාන්ත, විද්වතුන්, තරුණ තරුණියන් සහ සමාජයටද අනාගතය හැඩගස්වා ගැනීමේදී වැදගත් භූමිකාවක් නිරූපණය කිරීමට ඇති බව එතුමා මෙහිදී පෙන්වා දුන්නේය.

මෙම අවස්ථාවට ශ්‍රී ලංකා ඉන්දියා සමාජයේ හිටපු සභාපතිවරුන් තිදෙනකුට උපහාර පිරිනමන ලදී. මෙම උත්සවය කොළඹ පෙරදිග සංගීත කණ්ඩායමේ ඉදිරිපත් කිරීමකින් හා රාත්‍රී භෝජන සංග්‍රහයකින් නිමාවට පත් විය.
