35 Sri Lankan students of Hindi to study in India with fully funded scholarships
Thirty five Sri Lankan students have been selected to study Hindi in India availing scholarship from Government of India (GOI). GOI sponsors their visit, academic fees and local hospitality for the nine-month course at the Kendriya Hindi Sansthan (KHS) or Central Institute of Hindi, Agra from August 2025 to May 2026.
2. On 28 July 2025, High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka H.E Santosh Jha interacted with the students before their departure to India. He highlighted the role of Hindi language and literature in strengthening the millennia-old cultural, linguistic, literary, and religious ties between India and Sri Lanka. The links between Hindi and Sinhala words and the origins of words were also discussed. High Commissioner Jha conveyed his best wishes to the scholars for their stay in India.
3. The selected students include seventeen from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, four each from, the Sri Palee campus of the University of Colombo and Rajarata University in Anuradhapura, two each from University of Kelaniya, Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre and others from University of Sabaragamuwa, Buddhist monastic institutions.
4. Hindi enjoys wide-spread affection of students and people in Sri Lanka and is being taught in almost 100 institutions including renowned schools and Universities of Sri Lanka. Noteworthy that this year for the first time, 35 Hindi teachers from government schools of Sri Lanka were trained in the institution in Agra in July, 2025.
5. Cultural arm of the High Commission of India, Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre has been coordinating this scholarship since 2011. In the last 13 years, over 200 students from Sri Lanka have been awarded this scholarship titled “Propagation of Hindi Abroad”. This year, the highest number of students has been selected from Sri Lanka. Hindi language, literature and cinema continue to play a significant role in further deepening the millennia-old civilisational ties between India and Sri Lanka.
