Project Steering Committee meeting on construction of Surgical Unit Teaching Hospital, Batticaloa

A Project Steering Committee meeting on construction of Surgical Unit Teaching Hospital, Batticaloa chaired by Indian Deputy High Commissioner Vinod K Jacob was held in Colombo on 16 March 2021. The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. S Janaka Sri Chandraguptha, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine of the Government of Sri Lanka. The meeting was conducted by Head of the Development Cooperation Wing of the Indian High Commission, Mr. Eldos Mathew Punnoose, First Secretary. Other participants included representatives from Sri Lankan Ministry of Health, Batticaloa Teaching Hospital, representatives of Malwatte Construction, Contractor of the Project and CECB, Consultant appointed by Government of Sri Lanka for the project.

The meeting reviewed the progress on the project worth LKR 275 million. It is expected that upon completion, the Surgical Unit will give an added boost to public health in the Batticaloa region. The project is in continuation of Government of India’s people-oriented development cooperation partnership with Government of Sri Lanka. India’s overall commitment of development assistance to Sri Lanka stands at a total of around US$ 3.5 billion and among these, US$ 560 million is under grants.
